Federal Grant Program Benefits Allentown Schools
Schools are always in need of money. But due to all the budget cuts of recent, many are finding it hard to cover costs. But that should not be the problem for some schools in Allentown. A federal grant program has awarded the Allentown School District a total of $6.3 million to assist in improving school curriculum. According to district officials, the grant money is to be used to improve curriculum and student services at William Allen High School; Trexler, Raub, and Harrison Morton middle schools; and Central Elementary.
Each year for the next three years the school district will be awarded $2.1 million through the federal grant program. The SIG (school improvement grant program) is aimed at improving the lowest performing schools in Philadelphia through designing and implementing one of four intensive school reform models.
Unfortunately, the money awarded did not provide the total amount requested. Thus, administrators are now looking at priorities and plans to allocate funds for the most critical areas and to determine if other grants can be braided into the structures established by the schools.
